Women greatly differ from men when it comes to health tips. While men may be encouraged to do certain things in order to stay fit, women might be discouraged from the aforementioned health tips. In other words, what women need to stay healthy might be completely different from what men need to stay fit. Tip #1: Check for Breast Cancer

The American Cancer Society (ACS) no longer recommends monthly breast self-exams for women. Nevertheless, it suggests them as “an alternative” for women in their early 20s. As a woman, you should be on the lookout for any uncommon changes in your breasts and report any concerns to your doctor. Remember, all women 40 and older should go for a mammogram on a yearly basis because a mammogram is one of the most effective ways to detect cancer in its earliest stages, when it is most treatable.

Tip #2: Sun Safely

We all know that excessive exposure to the sun’s harmful rays, such as UV rays, leads to cancer of the skin, which can be deadly if not taken care of properly. To protect your skin against skin cancer, doctors advise that you wear sunscreen with an SPF (sunscreen protection factor) of at least 15 if you are going to stay outdoors for several minutes. Even if you wear sunscreen faithfully, regular check up for signs of skin cancer is highly recommended. Warning signs include feel of birthmarks, freckles, or moles, or any changes in the color, shape, size, or new, enlarging pigmented or red skin areas. If you notice any of these changes or find sores that are not healing, consult your doctor immediately.

Tip #3: Be Keen to Manage Stress

Regardless of what stage of her life (grandmother, mother, or daughter), a woman always wears many hats and deals with a lot of stress and pressure. Dr. Donald Novey, MD, an integrative medicine physician with the Advocate Medical Group in Park Ridge III, advises that you take a few minutes daily just to relax and get your perspective back again. “It does not take long, and mental health is essential for your physical well-being,” adds Dr. Novey. Other ways of managing stress include exercising and meditating.

Tip #4: Exercise Regularly

According to recent studies, heart disease is among the leading causes of death among women in America. Fortunately, there are plenty of exercises that can help keep your heart healthy. Consider exercising at least 30 minutes a day or 5 days a week, if not every day. Sabrena Merill, MS, of Lawrence, Kan., a group fitness instructor and certified personal trainer and the American Council on Exercise spokeswoman, advises that you consider aerobic exercises (dancing, jogging, swimming, walking, and bicycling) because they are great for women’s health in general and especially for your heart.

Tip #5: Avoid Unhealthy Habits

Avoid cigarettes and stay away from people who smoke. Do not use drugs either. If you have to drink alcohol, do so in moderation. More than a few women’s health studies indicate that women can safely consume one drink per day. A drink is considered to be around 12 – 14 grams of alcohol, which is equivalent to 12 ounces of beer (4.5% of alcohol); 5 ounces of wine (12.9% of alcohol); or 1.5 ounces of spirits (hard liquor such as whiskey or gin, 80-proof).


Although a woman’s health needs changes as she ages, the basics of her health remain the same. If you follow these five tips for women on staying healthy, you will improve your quality of life for years to come.
